Is it possible to write in math quadrant IIII instead of quadrant IV?

I know that some clock makers use IIII instead of IV for tradition and aesthetic reasons. However, in chemistry it seems to be incorrect to use IIII to label ions. So I wonder which rule applies to math. Also if possible, please provide some source or reference other than wikipedia or online encyclopedias.
